Asnuntuck Community College is situated in Enfield, Connecticut about halfway between Springfield, Massachusetts, and Hartford, Connecticut. It is conveniently located off Interstate 91 where students travel from the north from Massachusetts and from the south from the Hartford area to attend. This institution provides technical training to its students by offering both associate degree and certificate programs. Many of Asnuntuck's students complete their studies and then transfer to a 4-year degree program.

The mission of Asnuntuck Community College is to offer associate degree and certificate programs in an affordable, accessible, and nurturing atmosphere. Students can transfer these programs to another institution if they wish to continue on with other educational opportunities. It also offers its students career preparation and a source of learning for a lifetime.

History of Asnuntuck Community College

Asnuntuck Community College was founded in 1969 by the Connecticut legislature as part of the state community college network. The first classes commenced in 1972 with just a few hundred students. The first class graduated in 1974 by earning associate degrees in both science and art. The school gained accreditation in 1977, and its accreditation has been renewed through 2020.

When it was established, the college was known as North Central Connecticut Community College. In 1972, the college was renamed Asnuntuck, the Native American word for "fresh water." The college is located on the site of a 1689 land purchase from the Podunk Tribe of the Asnuntuck River Area.

Locations Throughout The Years

Asnuntuck Community College began its life in Enfield in 1974 in the Thompsonville section of town, in the North School building. Then, in 1974, it moved to a warehouse on Phoenix Avenue. When the college outgrew that location in 1983, it moved to Elm Street, where the college remains to this day. In 2011, construction plans were approved, and more than 8 million dollars worth of renovations will be completed. The electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems will be upgraded, along with a roof replacement, science lab upgrade, and lobby redesign.

Technical Training Focus

In 1992, the legislature of Connecticut required that the technical and community colleges in the state combined. There was no technical college for Asnuntuck to merge with, but it did direct many of its programs to a more technical focus. This standard remains in place to this day with the Manufacturing Technology Center (MTC) which provides training for students who want to enter the manufacturing workforce.

Student Support

The Student Services department offers academic advisors, career and transfer counselors, and disability counselors. The college offers free childcare, along with other support to its students. There are a variety of activities available outside of classes including sports, clubs, student leadership, and internships.

What Is the Massage Therapy Program Like?

Massage therapists use touch to work the muscles and tissues of the body. Therapists can assist with injuries, pain, and circulation. They can also provide stress-relief, relaxation, and well-being to their clients. Massage Therapy students should expect to take a number of science courses to help them learn about the human body and how it works. Students can expect to study the following subjects during their coursework (please note that this is not an exhaustive list):

  • Anatomy - the study of the structure of the human body 
  • Physiology - the study of the functions of the human body
  • Kinesiology - the study of how the body moves
  • Pathology - the study of the causes and effects of diseases
  • Hands-on techniques
  • Massage theory
  • Ethics
  • Business

Students can expect to learn about how to work with clients in many settings, including corporate settings, day spas, gyms, health clubs, hotels, and clinics. Clinics can be formed with other massage therapists or with chiropractors. Some Massage Therapists are self-employed and provide clients service in a clinic, home, or work environment.

Students must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED to apply for the program. Students must be physically able to provide massage, which can be physically challenging. Students of the Massage Therapy program must be able to perform tasks such as the following:

  • Physical demands such as bending, lunging, and squatting
  • Use both hands simultaneously and move around the massage table
  • Be free of physical disorders that would interfere with demands of the job
  • Be energetic and empathetic
  • Be comfortable with touch
  • Respect the ethics of the field, along with modesty and privacy of clients
  • Provide massage to a variety of people

How Can Asnuntuck Community College Help You Succeed in Your Massage Career?

The Massage Therapy program at the college was started in 2012 and provides comprehensive hands-on training. The program can be completed in less than 10 months by attending this full-time, associate degree program. The program consists of 884 hours of study in 19 classes. The program teaches you about the muscles of the body, how they attach, and how they move. It allows students to practice their techniques under the supervision of an instructor on clients who come to the college for massages.

The program charges its clients a discounted rate to receive massages from its students. Students must receive hands-on-training and be able to successfully pass a massage exam on the instructor prior to being allowed to work with the public.

Internship and National Exam Preparation

The Massage Therapy program also includes a 100-hour clinical internship. Students of the program are eligible to take the national licensing examination as part of the cost of the program of study. Upon program completion, students take the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) as presided over by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). This exam provides a standard exam for entry-level students in the Massage Therapy field of study.

In the state of Connecticut, this exam allows students to obtain a license for Massage Therapy. In Massachusetts, students are required to take an additional class called the Theory of Massage Modalities to meet the conditions for licensure in that state. After the students pass the examination, the student can apply for a state license. The Asnuntuck Massage Therapy program currently has a 100% pass rate on the MBLEx examination.

  • Provide a full body massage using various techniques
  • Show knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Know origin, action, and insertions of muscles
  • Comprehend pathologies and how to work with clients who have them

  • Understand ethics and how to deal with ethical issues
  • Gain knowledge on the business side of massage therapy

Free Daycare Available to Students

For students that participate in the daytime program, the college offers a free daycare program for the children of students. This program is offered through the college's reading room. This resource was established back in 1974 and continues to be a unique resource for Asnuntuck's students today. The reading room works on the idea of a cooperative entity. Parents must volunteer for 2 hours each week to take part in using this resource. Parents can use this resource when on campus taking classes, studying, researching, doing homework, or other requirements for their on-campus education.

Children are encouraged to participate in play-based learning in the reading room. Children must be at least 3 years of age and have required immunizations to be accepted to the daycare.

Job Security

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the field of Massage Therapy is expected to grow 26% from 2016 to 2026. This is a much faster rate of growth than the average occupation. It is one of the fastest-growing occupations in the healthcare field. Massage Therapists can expect an income of around $40,000. Asnuntuck currently has employers waiting for students to graduate from their program. Note that many employers require passing a background check prior to hiring.
